The Jacaranda 94.2 Sisters With Blisters Walk, In association with 1st For Women Insurance Brokers

The Cause

STOP ABUSE, ONE STEP AT A TIME

Sisters with Blisters is an annual event that is aimed at raising much needed awareness on women and child abuse in this country. It falls in line with the International 16 days of Activism against women and child abuse which runs from 25 November - 10 December.

The 16 Days of Activism: No Violence Against Women is a United Nations campaign. It challenges perpetrators of these offences to change their behaviour, making the nation aware of how this violence manifests itself within South African society and the negative impact on these vulnerable groups.

So, in order to participate in this movement - Jacaranda 94.2 wanted an event concept that would grab the attention of our listeners and make them aware of this plight - primarily also focusing on the vulnerable group of our society women and children ensuring that they also get the message that they need to stand up and step out of an abusive or violent environment, which is never easy - Jacaranda 94.2 needed to make them aware of the support and the NGO's that are available to assist them

The concept: SHOES!

What is a woman willing to do for new shoes? More than you'd imagine... 'Carrie Bradshaw' of Sex in the City once said she spent $40 000 on shoes and had no place to stay and would probably grow old living in her shoes! That is why Jacaranda 94.2 decided to use women's irrational fetish for shoes for a good cause. We thought women who love shoes and are serious about preventing abuse against women and children would take the challenge of walking in their stilettos and speak up to break the silence, literally 'heel to heal'

Jacaranda 94.2 knew that this message and event will definitely stir and raise certain eyebrows but it would be strong enough to make people stand up and participate - in looking for a partner, Jacaranda 94.2 only approached 1st for Women Insurance Brokers who were ideal based on the numerous campaigns they had embarked on in also raising awareness for this plight - the partnership was a natural fit.

For the past 4 years, Jacaranda 94.2 and 1st for Women together have staged the Sisters with Blisters walk in November, starting with over 600 participants in 2006 to approximately 5000 participants in 2010. Men are also encouraged to take part in the walk - they don't have to wear stilettos, flat shoes are also welcome, it is the interaction with the people and the messages one gets from various speakers / survivors of the crimes and to also be aware of what is being done by the NGO's to help those that are most vulnerable in our country. Dogs are also welcome and need to be registered.

Goodie Bags will be given to the first 5 000 walkers to register and the first 5 000 walkers cross the finish will also receive a medal.

Women & Men Against Child Abuse

The rising incidence of child abuse cases in Pretoria prompted Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA), in partnership with PROCARE (a National Association of Social workers in Private Practice), to establish a KIDZ CLINIC in Hatfield, Pretoria, in March 2009.

The Kidz Clinic service is available at the Procare Centre two days per week, FREE of charge to victims of abuse and their families.

The funding received from the 2010 Sisters with Blisters campaign was put towards operational costs of this service, for the six months from December 2010 to May 2011.

During this time we attended to more than 200 children for assessments, intervention and therapy in criminal cases of child abuse. We have also seen 76 (non-offending) parents/guardians for counselling and trauma support.

The Pretoria Kidz Clinic renders a specialized one-stop service to child victims of sexual and physical abuse. The services include the following:

The service to children commence with a general child assessment by a social worker to obtain a holistic profile of the child's emotional, social, intellectual and personality development, as well as to determine the nature and extent of the abuse. The presence of trauma in the life of the child can be revealed by means of this assessment. It takes approximately two hours and is followed by a feedback session to the parent(s)/caregiver(s) of the child.

If any emotional or behavioural problems surface during the assessment it is addressed by providing the appropriate therapy and parental guidance. (It then gets referred for private rate counselling))

If signs of sexual or physical abuse surface in the course of the general child assessment, or if other indicators of abuse are present, an investigative process is commenced consisting of further steps selected from the list below, according to the needs in each case:

1. A trauma / forensic assessment are conducted by a social worker .The forensic focus is to determine the nature, extent and effects of the abuse as well as the identity the perpetrator/s. It takes two hours, followed by feedback to the parent(s)/caregiver(s). The process of disclosure is a very sensitive and complicated process and children find it very difficult to disclose all the detail needed for forensic purposes. The play approach, however, facilitates disclosure by the child. In some cases, follow-up interviews with the child may have to be conducted to obtain all the information needed. The assessment findings normally discriminate between children who have been sexually abused, those who may display such signs because of exposure to experiences such as adult sexual activities or pornography, and those having been coached by an adult to lay a charge against someone (e.g. by a vindictive partner after a divorce).

2. A medical examination of the child is arranged (if not already arranged by the Police), if possible immediately after the trauma/forensic assessment, but usually a few days later. The child is prepared for the examination to prevent the child from being further traumatised by the experience. A forensic medical report is compiled after the examination.

3. Consultations follow with police officials, lawyers, other professionals involved as well as one or more of the adults concerned, e.g. the non-offending parent(s)/caregiver(s), school teachers, friends, and - in some cases - the alleged perpetrator(s).

4. An interactional analysis can also be done to determine the interactional patterns existing between the child and the adults concerned. This is done if the process will not traumatise the child. An interactional analysis consists of one or more sessions of selected types of structured and unstructured play between a particular adult and the child, which is observed by professionals from behind one way glass.

5. If applicable, multi-professional discussions on the case are conducted with the social worker(s)/psychologist(s), medical doctor, lawyers, police, advocates of the Attorney General's Office and the prosecutors as well as the welfare organisations concerned.

6. A report (forensic or competence to testify) is Compiled where legal proceedings are instituted.

7. Before the hearing, court preparation sessions are provided for the child witness. The child receives an orientation session regarding court procedures. For this purpose dolls and a court prep 'kit' (4) are used to simulate the roles of the various role players in court.

8. If required, the social worker and the medical doctor concerned will act as expert witnesses in court.

9. The last phase consists of play therapy sessions for the child in order to overcome the effects of the experience of abuse. The family or support systems of the child are always involved in the therapy. Family therapy and individual therapy may be necessary. Depending on the circumstances, therapy may be done with the perpetrator as well. The parent(s)/caregiver(s) of the child are engaged in the therapy in such a way that each session not only serves as therapy, but also teaches the parent(s)/caregiver(s) to conduct the therapeutic activities at home. In this way the parent(s)/caregiver(s) develops insight into the therapeutic process as well as into healthy relationships.

Since the opening of the first Kidz Clinic in 2000, WMACA have provided more than 64,111 treatment services to 11,212 children and 10,369 parents/caregivers.

Advocacy in South Africa - Hate Speech case against Julius Malema

The Sonke complaint against the ANC Youth League Leader, Julius Malema, and the positive outcome in the form of the ruling by the Equality Court generated huge amounts of positive publicity for Sonke, including national print, radio and television media. More importantly, it set an important precedent: men can and should hold other men accountable for words and actions that undermine gender equality and contribute to violence against women, including-- and perhaps especially-those in positions of power.

In June 2011 the cases came to and end with Julius Malema issuing an apology to women. Sonke welcomed Mr Malema-s public apology but noted with concern the amount of time that has lapsed since the Equality Court ruling. Sonke believes the successful, if late, resolution of this case proves that South African leaders can be held accountable for their public statements, and sees this is a positive sign for our democracy. It also reinforces the critical role that civil society can play in protecting human rights.

Sisters with Blisters 2010 Prize Winner - enjoys MSC Cruise Prize!

The fifth annual Jacaranda 94.2 Sisters with Blisters walk in association with 1st for Women Insurance Brokers, which encourages South Africans to take a unified stand against women and child abuse, was held at The Campus in Bryanston on Saturday, 27 November 2010.

Over 5 000 women, men and children participated in this popular event which puts a spotlight on the unacceptably high level of women and child abuse in this country.

Sister with Blisters encourages people to walk in high heels and feel the pain of abuse, thereby taking a stand. However, those who arrived in more comfy footwear were also able to participate in this unique event. Dogs were also welcome to attend this event. Dog hospitality was provided by Royal Canin. R300 000 was raised for the selected charities - Men & Women against Child Abuse and the Sonke Gender Justice Network.

Participants included celebrities such as Heinz Winkler, Paulo from Eden, Mandi du Plooy-Baard, Miss South Africa 2009 - Nicole Flint, Jana Strydom, Michael Mol, Ashley Hayden and many more.

As with every year, there were amazing prizes up for grabs, from a LG flat screen television, Jenna Clifford jewellery and a MSC Cruise. One such lucky winner was Tanya Cloete who won a 6 night cruise to Fort Dauphin in Madagascar on board the MSC Melody.  It was her first time to take part in the Sisters with Blisters walk and she says she will definitely do it again! "My husband was actually quite mad at me the night before the event because we live in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. We were going to walk the 4km walk and he reckoned that we could walk 4km in our home town! Imagine his surprise when we won the cruise - he promised to never doubt me again. "When asked what she thought of the Sisters with Blisters she said that she was in awe of all the celebrities and loved some of the costumes!

The Melody cruise was from the 26 January to 1 February 2011. They sailed to Madagascar where they took a tour of the island. "The cruise was absolutely breath-taking! We weren-t that many people on the cruise, about 490, but it was so much fun."

The parts about the cruise that she loved the most were the food and the crew and all their unique personalities and off course the entertainment!

"My husband and I would like to formally thank Jacaranda 94.2 in association with 1st for Women Insurance Brokers. It was a memorable cruise and will be crafted in our hearts forever."

Jacaranda 94.2-s spokesperson Jenny Griesel says that she is extremely pleased with the outcome of Tanya and her husband-s experience. Sisters with Blisters 2009 Prize Winner - Walking my way to Paris

Who would have thought that getting involved with the Sisters with Blisters walk would see me walking my way around Paris!

On the spur of the moment, I decided to join in on the walk with my Fiancé and her company Pageants SA & titleholders, who had formed a group to support Sisters with Blisters.

Having recently recovered from a triple fusion back operation, this was my first step to getting back on the road. Having previously participated in 11 Comrades Marathons, various cycle races including the Argus, The Jock, 100 milers and much more, I felt it was time to get back on my feet and this was just what I needed to get me going again.

Taking a casual walk around the course with some members of our group was really uplifting and the enthusiasm captured me once more and has spurred me on to take on the challenge of running the Comrades again in 2011.

Winning the Grand Prize to Paris was absolutely amazing and was the highlight of my life since I have never won anything and to top it all, have never ever been overseas before.

This prize resulted in me using the trip to France as a stepping stone for a five week Honeymoon of a lifetime! I was able to see nine countries in Europe with my wonderful wife Carolyn including France, Spain, Gibraltar, Portugal, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Brussels & Luxembourg.

Nicolas from Trafalgar Tours went out of his way to assist us with the week in Paris, booking us in at the Timhotel Tour Eiffel Hotel, a few minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower. He also assisted us with our Visa requirements and arranged our transport from the airport and a wonderful day trip around Paris.

Before we knew it we were winging our way to Paris a day after our wedding.  Leaving Johannesburg on the A380 on Air France on the 25th April we started a honeymoon that most can only dream about.

Arriving in Paris early the next morning was exhilarating as we touched down after a 10 hour flight at Charles De Gaul airport, watching the landing from onboard cameras placed on the nose, belly and tail of the plane!

We checked into the friendly hotel and started our sightseeing almost immediately, as we knew we had lots to see in the week ahead. The following days saw us taking in the sights and sounds of Paris with a trip to the Palace of Versailles, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Grand Louvre Museum where we saw the painting of the Mona Lisa and other mind blowing paintings, sculptures, artifacts and much more. We went up the Eiffel Tower at 9pm at night to watch the sunset over Paris which was so romantic!

The following days were spent going from one place to the other seeing cathedrals, museums and famous landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees, Montmartre and an evening spent at the Moulin Rouge show watching the Can-Can dancers while sipping on champagne. If there was a place to see we saw it, including the Madam Tussards Wax Museum, Perfume Factory and even walking up the 500 steps to the top of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

The illuminations of Paris seen from the cruise on the Seine river was absolutely wonderful and at the end of the cruise we were able to catch the light display on the Eiffel Tower which takes place every hour after sunset.

Using the Metro to get around Paris was extremely easy and very cost effective and efficient. We even managed to find the time to spend a day at Euro Disney which is not only a children's paradise but makes every adventure last forever. Cramming every ride in the park into one day was amazing with our favourites being Space Mountain, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, Pirates of the Caribbean, It's a Small World and Peter Pans Flight. With over 50 rides and attractions in the Park our day ended late into the evening with a final display of the Disney Characters in a grand parade. Who ever said that Euro Disney was for children only?

We embarked on several shopping sprees during our trip, however sadly our baggage allowance restricted us from bringing home the whole of Paris! Sadly our trip came to an end in Paris as we continued our honeymoon into Europe but the romance we found in Paris during the first week of our honeymoon will be remembered forever!

We would like to thank Jacaranda FM and Trafalgar Tours for this wonderful prize and would like to assure you that we will be back for the 2010 Sisters with Blisters Walk in full force with Pageants SA and all our titleholders, family and friends and will be claiming the grand prize again!

Thank you for bringing the awareness of Woman & Children Abuse through your Sisters for Blisters walk and for the chance to win the fantastic prizes you have for those who do participate, especially the Grand Prize. You helped make our dream come true!

We returned home on the 28th May. Our trip to Paris was fantastic and will be forever etched in our memories.

Kind regards

Nico & Carolyn Botha

The Leigh Matthews Stress and Trauma Centre

"Little by little one walks far." - Peruvian Proverb

The loss of a loved one, someone close to your heart, mind and soul is one of the cruelest ordeals that could ever happen. Nothing and no one on earth can ever prepare you for the days, months and years ahead.

The Leigh Matthews Stress and Trauma Centre (LMSTC), supported by the office of Community Development, University of Johannesburg, officially opened its doors on 17th August 2005, with Rob, Sharon and Karen Matthews as its patrons. The Centre was established to address the need for counseling to community members who cannot otherwise afford such professional services.

Living with Trauma

Thousands of people in South Africa today are affected by crime, violence, divorce, accidents and disease on a daily basis. When one person is traumatized, his/he family as well as thecommunity are also influenced which can result in an entire community being distressed.

Bethany House

Bethany House is situated in Bertram's/Lorentzville and houses 27 women and their 26 children. All of the women have escaped abusive relationships, trafficking or sexual assault. Bethany is a haven and a place of love, peace and rest for these women and their children.

Bethany aims to assist these women and their children in their reintegration back into society following their traumatic and often 'near death'; experiences. This project';s aim is to provide accommodation, counselling and spiritual services for destitute women and children.

Established in 1989, Bethany serves the greater Johannesburg area and can accommodate up to 55 women and their children at any one time. Women and their children are sent to Bethany House by the local police and hospitals. Women entering the shelter can be accommodated from 6 to 18 months depending on the healing process.

Many women arrive at the shelter having been thrown out of their homes by their husbands and often having lost everything, including identity documents, marriage certificates, birth certificates, clinic cards and the saddest of all their dignity and self-confidence.
